ORAL HISTORY - Doug Austin

Priscilla was a staunch Presbyterian, and wouldn't go to any other church.  She used to pick people out of the gutter and take them to church. If she couldn't go to church, she'd get an old man, who had a knobbly walking stick, to take her children to church.  He'd sit behind them, and knock them over the head with his stick, if they misbehaved. She was a clever business woman.  Her son, George Frederick, thought the world of her, and they got on well together. She was so rapt in her husband that she walked down to the cemetery to talk to him whenever there was something on her mind.  She would come back to the house with a smile on her face, and say: 'I'm right now.  I know what to do.' When she was dying, she gathered her family around her bed, and asked them to promise to meet her in heaven.  Lindsay William, the eldest, told her he couldn't do that, because he couldn't believe the things she

believed.

ORAL HISTORY - Jean Lovegrove

Priscilla Austin insisted the minister came on Monday mornings to discuss the sermon with her.

OBITUARY - Feb. 6th, 1909

OLD RESIDENT PASSES

MRS. AUSTIN

Still another of our old and loved ones has passed from the reach of mortal pain and misery to the haven of rest above, the personage on this occasion being Mrs. Priscilla Ann Austin, widow of John Lyndsay Austin, of Barkly Street, Sunbury.  Though it was known that Mrs. Austin was approaching a ripe old age, her hearty manner and appearance gave no rise to concern as to a probable mortal illness.  That she had for some time past been suffering from a malady that wrought in its train much suffering, few were aware, and the announcement of her death came with painful suddenness to her many friends.  Mrs. Austin was a widow, her husband having died many years ago. Born in England in the year 1838, she spent her girlhood days in that place, and on attaining her womanhood married and came to Australia in 1847, landing in Melbourne after a somewhat perilous voyage.  Mr. and Mrs. Austin came straight up to Sunbury, which was then but the quarters of the men engaged in laying the line to Bendigo.  Seeing that a business would thrive at the settlement, they opened a small store, and by keen attention to business, and courteous and obliging nature, they soon became of sufficient standing to enable them to open branch businesses in the neighbouring towns.  When the bad times through which the town passed in its infancy prevailed, the obliging nature of the deceased paved the way to their own downfall, being swindled by those whom they trusted.  They then went on to Romsey, and later to Melbourne, but ultimately returned to Sunbury again, where they opened business as formerly. This they conducted successfully till the year 1889, when the death of her husband necessitated the relinquishing of business and living a private life.  In this state she remained till the day of her death.

The life of Priscilla Ann was like an open book.  Critics may search the pages of that life's history and find nothing that could ever disparage the good name she bore.  Her long residence in the town necessarily brought her into contact with many, and during her early life here, when times were hard and privations prevalent, her good and generous nature wrought many a deed that has long lived in the minds of many a resident.  Ever a keen tactician, she helped the helpless and raised the fallen in a manner that has endeared her to the hearts of many.  As old age slowly placed its hand upon her, and rendered her physical movements less blithesome as in the days of yore, still her spirit ever remained buoyant and light hearted, and her nature ever retained its deep dyed splendour.  Hers was a beautiful character  ---- would that there were a hundred such.  Mrs. Austin was a Christian woman.  A regular attendant at the Presbyterian Church, and one who lived to the gospel she loved.  Till the last moment on this earth, her conscience was at rest, and she met death with a glad hand, secure in the thought that she had done her duty nobly, and would soon be free from the sin and sorrow of this mortal world.  Death in such a form as this is beauteous.  There is no pain in the lapse of a life so spent.  The sting of death is annulled by the beautiful life to which the true Christian shall be lifted.  Her glad response to the call of her Maker seems sterling proof that her faith was answered and accepted.  The close of a life so lived removes from our midst the mortal image of a character that stands as ideal, and it is a ray of sunshine to note that she passed to the arms of her Saviour in the spirit that she had dwelt amid the pain and iniquity of a cruel world. Mrs. Austin reared a family of 12.  Of these 10 are still living, 2 sons having died some time ago.  In the home circle her earthly loss will be felt in the sternest reality.  She was a kind and loving mother, and an ideal parent.  Through all her trials  she had ever had the thought of her children at heart, and the esteem in which the family are held today, for the crowning efforts of her efficient management. Her sons and daughters are in no means fully cognisant of the enormity of their loss.  She was the one who let light into their troubles, the guiding hand in times of danger, and adviser in times of temptation.  A mother that fully won and earned the implicit and loving faith of her children.  Her loss is great, but her family may well be contented, their mother has passed to a life that will bear no sorrow and pain, and the knowledge that she has gone to the Heavenly home of Him for whom she lived, must go far to ease the pain of this mortal parting.  She dwelt and died in the glory of adoration, and the removal of her presence from the many loved ones left behind, causes pain and  sorrow, insignificant to the glory and happiness in which her spirit will henceforth live forever. To the children and relatives of the departed one we extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy.  They have lost the one who during their life has been their earthly guide, and her loss is great, but let them take her heavenly gain in the spirit of the bereaved poet, who says:

Not now, but in the coming years --

It may be in the better land--

We'll read the meaning of our tears,

And then, ah then, we'll understand.

The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, when the remains, encased in a massive oak coffin, were conveyed to the Presbyterian Church, and after a short burial service, the sad cortege wended its way

to the cemetery, where she was laid to rest between the coffins of her husband and son.  The scene at graveside was pathetic, the Rev. W. Goyen read the burial service. The mortuary arrangements were conducted by Messrs. Allison of Melbourne. In the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning the Rev. Goyen will preach an In Memoriam Service.
